Submission of this application is the first step in the volunteer application and selection process. Please note that due to the high volume of applications we receive, specific requirements of our programs, and limited openings, we are unable to place every applicant.

The Volunteer Services team at Children's National will review all applications received and select candidates to continue to the next step in the onboarding process. Next steps may vary depending on each volunteer assignment and will include an interview with your prospective supervisor. The Volunteer Services team will communicate via email regarding final decisions and will provide instructions regarding required paperwork.

Individuals who are selected to become a Children's National Volunteer must adhere to the onboarding and training requirements of the program which includes a background investigation performed by an outside agency, submission of a comprehensive medical packet for medical clearance, online orientation, and in­ person training.

Volunteer Opportunities for 18 years and older:

  • Seacrest Studios Volunteer: Seacrest Studios volunteers are directly supervised by the Seacrest Studios Media Specialists. Volunteers will help spread joy to patients by engaging and assisting with games, activities, celebrity visits, special events, prize deliveries, and more in the studio. Volunteers also have the opportunity to host or help curate on-air programming designed for patients and families.
    • Must be age 18+ and commit to a weekly shift of 2 hours  
  • Gaming Technology Volunteer: Gaming Technology Volunteers report directly to the Patient Gaming Technology Coordinator and work to support the goals and mission of the Patient Gaming Department. Volunteers will work with patients ages 5 to 18 across a variety of hospital units. Duties include visiting referred patients at bedside with a gaming cart (containing an Xbox & Nintendo Switch 2) and playing video games with them, assisting with special gaming events, and basic cleaning/equipment upkeep (ie. wiping down volunteer cart before/after use and notifying Patient Gaming Coordinator if equipment is not functioning properly).
    • Must be age 18+ and commit to a weekly shift of 2 hours
  • Healing Garden Volunteer: Healing Garden volunteers are directly supervised by the Activity Coordinators who manage all Healing Garden activities and events. Volunteers assist with programmatic, administrative and special events in the outdoor Healing Garden, playrooms and other identified program spaces.  
    • Must be age 18+ and commit to a weekly shift of 2 hours  
  • Hospitality Volunteer: Hospitality Volunteers are directly supervised by the Volunteer Services Coordinators. These volunteers assist with rounding in outpatient and inpatient areas with comfort items and activities, delivering toy requests and other items to patients, greeting and assisting visitors with wayfinding, assisting with toy donations and Dr. Bear's Closet organization, administrative support, and more.
    • Must be age 15+ and commit to a regular weekly shift of 2 hours
  • Family Resource Center Volunteer: Resource Center volunteers are directly supervised by the Family Library & Resource Center Coordinator. Duties include maintaining the library space and ensuring it is a clean, welcoming space for patients and families, interacting with patients, families, and visitors in the Family Resource Center in a friendly and professional manner, facilitating story time events, running the book cart, assisting with special events, activities, and projects, and more. FRC Volunteers age 18+ are also able to provide bedside reading to patients in our inpatient units.
    • Must be age 15+ and commit to a weekly shift of 2 hours  
  • Canine Courier: Canine Courier Volunteers are directly supervised by the Animal Visitation program coordinators. They assist and escort pet visitation teams to outpatient and inpatient areas, remain with the pet team for the duration of their volunteer shift, and assist with additional programs and events as needed.
    • Must be age 18+ and commit to a weekly shift of 2 hours  
  • Tutor Volunteer: Tutor Volunteers are directly supervised by the hospital's Education Specialists and hospital-based teachers. They assist patients with academics/schoolwork and offer educational enrichment opportunities for kids of all ages.
    • Must be age 18+ and commit to a weekly shift of 2 hours

Volunteer Opportunities for 15-17 year olds:

  • Hospitality Volunteer: Hospitality Volunteers are directly supervised by the Volunteer Services Coordinators.
